How to Fly with Skis and a Snowboard: A Practical Guide

7 October 2026

If you are flying to ski with your own gear, the flight is the riskiest part of the trip: your equipment travels in the hold, and how you pack it decides what condition it arrives in. Here are practical tips that work for most flights. Exact allowances and fees differ between airlines and change over time, so always check them on the airline’s own website.

Bag or hard case

Skis and snowboards travel best in a dedicated padded bag or a hard case. A padded bag protects against scratches and light knocks, a hard case against serious impacts. If your gear is expensive or you have a connection, a hard case is the safer choice. You can fit skis with poles or a snowboard in one bag, but watch the total weight.

How to pack

Weight, size and paperwork

Skis and snowboards usually count as sports equipment and may be treated as oversized baggage. Rules on weight, length and fees differ between airlines, so do not rely on someone else’s experience: open the sports baggage section on the carrier’s site and, if needed, add it to your booking in advance. That is almost always cheaper and calmer than sorting it out at the airport.

Insuring your gear

Check whether your travel insurance covers sports equipment in transit. If it does not, consider a separate policy or at least estimate what replacement would cost. Keep receipts or photos of your kit — they help with any claim.

The alternative: rental

If bringing your own is too much hassle, you can rent skis or a snowboard at Myler itself. For a first trip it is the simplest option: no packing, no weight limits, no risk of damage. Check current rental terms at myler.am or in the official channel @myler_public.

From Yerevan to Myler

Myler is about 55 km from Yerevan, roughly an hour by car. If you arrive with your own gear, the MylerGo transfer is convenient: a passenger car picks you up at your Yerevan address at 09:20, there is room for skis and snowboards, and you are back in Yerevan by 18:00–18:30. The transfer runs on weekdays, costs 8,000 AMD per person round trip, with free cancellation until 23:00 the night before. Book on Telegram or WhatsApp at mylergo.com.

FAQ

Do I need to tell the airline about my skis?
Often yes: it is best to add sports baggage when booking or contact the airline in advance. Check the exact procedure on its website.

Can I check my ski boots?
You can, but it is safer to carry them on or wear them for the journey.

What if my gear is damaged?
Do not leave the baggage claim area: report it to an airline employee and file a damage report on the spot.
